KANAKO NAKANISH: From a Small Japanese Island to International Fashion Stages

Grace, elegance, and quiet strength — Kanako Nakanishi embodies all three. Born and raised on a small island in Japan with a population of just 20,000 people, she never imagined that one day she would walk international runways and represent timeless beauty on global fashion stages.

Today, as she approaches the age of 60, Kanako continues to inspire women around the world through her participation in prestigious fashion events, including the kimono show at the 2025 Kansai Expo, fashion shows in South Korea, and Paris Fashion Week 2026.

In this exclusive interview for Mojito Magazine, Kanako opens up about her roots, the beauty of island life, overcoming age stereotypes in fashion, and why she believes it is never too late to follow your dreams.

Kanako, you were born and raised on a small island in Japan with a population of around 20,000 people. How did your hometown shape your personality, values, and dreams?

I was born and raised on a small island in Japan with a population of around 20,000 people. Growing up surrounded by nature and a close-knit community taught me the importance of kindness, gratitude, and human connection.

When I was 18, I left the island and later lived in the Kansai area, Australia, and the Kanto region for many years. Experiencing different cultures and ways of life broadened my perspective and helped me grow as a person.

However, no matter where I lived, my island always remained in my heart. About 12 years ago, I returned to my hometown, and that experience made me appreciate its beauty, culture, and warmth even more deeply.

My hometown gave me both humility and courage — the courage to dream beyond the island, and the strength to always stay true to myself.

Your island seems to hold a very special place in your heart. What would you like the world to understand and feel about its culture, beauty, and spirit?

My island is very special to me because it has beautiful nature, peaceful scenery, and warm-hearted people. There is a spirit of helping and caring for one another that still exists strongly there.

I would like people around the world to feel the calmness, beauty, and humanity of island life. Even though it is a small place, it has a very deep culture and soul.

I hope more people will understand that happiness does not always come from big cities or material things. Sometimes true richness comes from nature, community, and simple everyday life.

As you approach the age of 60, you continue to challenge yourself on international stages — from the kimono show at the 2025 Kansai Expo to fashion shows in South Korea and Paris Fashion Week 2026. What inspires you to keep moving forward with such passion and confidence?

What inspires me most is the feeling that life never truly stops giving us new opportunities. Even as I approach the age of 60, I still want to grow, challenge myself, and experience new worlds.

Walking in international fashion shows such as the kimono show at the 2025 Kansai Expo, fashion events in South Korea, and Paris Fashion Week 2026 has been an incredible honor for me.

I want to show that passion, elegance, and dreams do not disappear with age. In fact, I believe confidence becomes stronger through life experience.

Every new challenge gives me energy and reminds me that it is never too late to shine.

Many people believe that age can limit new opportunities, especially in the fashion industry. Have you ever faced doubts or obstacles because of age or background, and how did you overcome them?

Yes, of course I have faced doubts and obstacles because of my age and background. Sometimes people believe that fashion and modeling are only for the young or for people from big cities.

However, I decided not to let those opinions limit me. Instead of focusing on age, I focus on individuality, experience, and inner beauty.

I believe true confidence comes from accepting yourself and continuing to move forward without fear. The support from people around me and my own determination helped me overcome those doubts.

Through your participation in international fashion events, what message do you hope to send to women around the world about beauty, confidence, and self-expression?

Through international fashion events, I hope to send a message that beauty has no age and no borders.

Every woman has her own charm, story, and strength. True beauty is not only about appearance — it comes from confidence, kindness, passion, and the courage to express yourself.

I hope women around the world will feel encouraged to love themselves and pursue what makes them happy, no matter their age or background.

Finally, what advice would you give to people who are afraid to follow their dreams because of their age, fears, or where they come from?

My advice is simple: please do not give up on your dreams because of fear, age, or where you come from.

It is never too late to start something new. Even small steps can lead to amazing opportunities.

I come from a small island in Japan, and I never imagined that one day I would walk on international stages. Life can surprise you in beautiful ways if you have courage and continue believing in yourself.

Age is not a limit — it is proof of the life we have lived. Dreams do not have an expiration date.

The future begins the moment we choose to believe in ourselves. I hope the next generation will move forward with courage, embrace their individuality, and never stop chasing their dreams.

No matter how small the island may be, dreams can always reach the world.
