An Exclusive Interview with Paloma Q Cruz: Art, Music, and the Pursuit of Passion

Paloma, since this is the month of February, we have to ask—what are your passions? What are you currently pursuing?

That’s a great question! I am currently pursuing two passions: art and music.

I love visiting art museums, and I also enjoy painting. I first started painting in elementary school and later took classes at the Art Institute of Chicago. My favorite medium is acrylic, and I’m most proud of my interpretation of Seurat’s A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte. Painting is a way for me to decompress, and I’m naturally drawn to pastel colors.

Recently, during Art Basel in Miami, I had the opportunity to spend time in a recording studio. This led me to a new passion—singing. I am now in the process of writing my own lyrics and hope to put together an album.

Can you tell us about your first love? Are you currently in a relationship?

My first love is the city of Chicago. I am currently in a relationship with New York and toying with London.

I understand what you’re hinting at—haha! I was engaged at the start of COVID, but unfortunately, I had to call off the engagement because we didn’t share the same values. Since then, I’ve learned what I’m willing to compromise on and, more importantly, that I should never sacrifice my emotional well-being.

Right now, I’m happily single. I do want to find someone to embark on the next chapter of my life with, but I don’t view marriage as “settling down.” Instead, I see it as elevating.

Where will you be this February?

I am currently in New York. At the end of the month, I’ll be traveling to London for Fashion Week and then heading to Milan for Fashion Week on February 27th.
