Architecture is more than just designing spaces – it’s about creating experiences, shaping emotions, and blending functionality with beauty. For Mahsan, an architect and interior designer, this philosophy extends beyond her work and into her personal passions. With a deep love for surfing, she finds inspiration in the movement of the ocean, the harmony of nature, and the balance between structure and flow.
In this interview, Mahsan shares her journey in architecture, the influences that shape her designs, and how her connection to the sea enriches both her creativity and her approach to life. From discussing the challenges of the industry to the serenity of riding waves, she offers a fascinating perspective on the intersection of art, space, and adventure.
Hello Mahsan. What first inspired you to pursue a career in architecture and interior design?
I was interested in it as a little child. I was always changing my own little room – constantly redecorating and moving the furniture around until I found a layout I liked. I can say that maybe I was born with this passion. If I had to name a talent, then my daughter has it too. I noticed it when she was six years old. No matter what project I’m working on, I always ask for her input and take her ideas into consideration.
How would you describe your design philosophy, and what principles guide your work?
Design and fashion are my passion – you have to love it. Everyone is talented at something. Some people discover their talent quickly, while others find it later in life. Some study for years, become professors, and still aren’t happy because it wasn’t truly what they wanted. But for people like me, discovering what we love happens early – sometimes as early as kindergarten. Maybe part of it is because I grew up without my parents; nobody forced me to do anything. I always made my own decisions.
Could you share one of the most challenging projects you’ve worked on and how you navigated any difficulties?
I am not a patient person at all – I want everything to happen quickly and perfectly. But through life experience, I’ve learned that patience is necessary. I’ve also accepted that people are different. I am very punctual and precise. When I say something, I keep my word. I am honest, and I respect everyone. But working with 100 different companies is not easy – especially as a woman in a leadership role. It’s a challenge when you have to ensure that men accept and respect your decisions.
If you could take on any project without limitations, what would it be and why?
Yes! I have a new project in LA that I am very excited about and proud to be working on.
Right now, I’m also thinking about what happened in Malibu due to the fires in the past few weeks – my favorite place. Many people have lost their homes, including families with children. My plan is to help as many people as I can, voluntarily and free of charge, so they can rebuild their homes. My top priority is families with children and elderly people, as much as I am able to support them.
Are there any design trends or innovations that particularly excite you at the moment?
There isn’t one particular brand that I’m really focused on. I love Scandinavian designers, as well as French and New York styles. I often mix different elements together, but it all depends on the location of the house—what country it’s in, whether it’s a house or an apartment, and what style the client prefers. I always adapt to my customers, but in the end, my goal is for them to be absolutely delighted.
That’s why we say: “Manifest your dream house with Mahsan.”
We know that both surfing and architecture are your passions. How do they complement each other in your life?
Surfing is a hobby, a sport, and something for my soul. It exists in a completely different world from design, yet it has always fascinated me. Fighting through the waves, finding stability on a board, being alone in the middle of the ocean, witnessing the beauty of the sea and the horizon, and then feeling grateful when you return to solid ground – these experiences have shaped me throughout my life. That’s why surfing has always been a part of me, just like my creativity in design.
Do you have a favorite surfing destination, and what makes it special to you?
My favorite place in the world for surfing is Malibu, California. I love it deeply. I have so many memories there. It’s where my daughter and I first started surfing together. Our first home was there. It will always be my favorite place, filled with positive and unforgettable experiences.

With such a busy career, how do you make time for your passion for surfing?
At the moment, I don’t have time for it – but I think that’s just an excuse. I used to surf all the time with my daughter, for years. But she graduated from high school very early, at 17, and went to college at the same age. I know she’s only 2.5 hours away from me by car, but she’s not at home anymore. That was hard for me at first – it made me feel depressed. Thankfully, I had a project in Germany that kept me busy for over four months, which helped a lot. Over time, I slowly accepted that she’s grown up.
If you could describe your perfect day, what would it include?
A sunny day at the beach with my daughter and my dog – in Malibu, of course. A road trip with my daughter for a week, surfing together. I love doing what I’m passionate about, working on projects I enjoy. At the same time, I also love staying home for a few days and enjoying peace and quiet. It depends on my mood, but right now, a surf trip with my daughter is my top priority.
