Today marks the opening of the 78th Cannes Film Festival — one of the most prestigious events in the world of cinema. And with it comes the chance to once again admire the refined and glamorous red carpet looks that celebrities and their stylists prepare each year.

However, this time there’s a major change. Ahead of the festival, organizers have introduced a new dress code: no more daring outfits, including sheer or overly provocative clothing.

“For the sake of decency, nudity is prohibited on the red carpet and in any other festival area. Festival teams are required to deny access to anyone who does not comply with these rules,” reads the official statement from the Cannes Film Festival.

Guests are now expected to favor more modest and refined looks — tuxedos or long evening gowns, for example. Also permitted are classic little black dresses, cocktail ensembles, tailored suits, elegant tops, and sophisticated sandals — with or without heels.
With this decision, Cannes organizers aim to put an end to the long-standing trend of “naked” fashion that has dominated red carpets in recent years. Transparent fabrics, mesh, thigh-high slits, and revealing corsets seem to be giving way to a more classic, even conservative aesthetic. So this year, we can expect less shock value from celebrities — and much more elegance.
